Kids are getting sent to adult prisons, everyday. Why?
This video covers a shocking trend, where children are being tried, sentenced or imprisoned as adults. Children who commit significant crimes should be held accountable. However, this trend begs the question: Why is this being done so frequently in the adult justice system? This should be a measure of last resort and be avoided whenever possible.
The Facts:
Every year, an estimated 250,000 children under the age 13 are tried, sentenced or imprisoned as adults. Of these, over 100,000 end up in adult prisons and jails. On any given day, there are 10,000 children held in adult jails or prisons in the US.
MCCD has been researching this trend for over a year in Michigan. How do children end up in adult prisons? Why are they there? What offenses did they commit? We’ll be releasing our results next month. Watch this video to get a head start. Stay tuned and be ready to be shocked…
