Two Juvenile Competency Trainings: July 17 and 18
MCCD is pleased to announce two exciting training opportunities to explore the new juvenile competency laws that went into effect in 2013.
The first training, on July 17, will feature national leading expert on juvenile competency, Dr. Tom Grisso, and is specifically designed for clinicians who are or wish to become qualified forensic mental health examiners. Learn more below.
The second training, July 18, is open to a broader audience, including attorneys, jurists, court administrators, and other stakeholders interesting in understanding the practical application of the laws. Learn more below.
A hotel room block has been reserved at the Ann Arbor Regent Hotel and Suites for $142/night. The room block is under “Juvenile Competency.” Reservations can be made at 734-973-6100.
The events are co-sponsored by the Michigan Department of Community Health, the State Bar of Michigan’s Children’s Law Section, the Michigan Psychiatric Society, the Michigan Psychological Association and the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency.

Dr. Thomas Grisso is Professor of Psychiatry at University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he is Director of the Law and Psychiatry Program. He is nationally recognized for his efforts to improve forensic evaluations for the courts, including competence to stand trial of adults and juveniles.
The registration fee is $175 and includes:

July 18th: Juvenile Competency in Court: Understanding and Applying Michigan’s New Law

University of Massachusetts Medical School, Law and Psychiatry Program
Dr. Kimberly Larson is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where she is a part of the Law and Psychiatry Program. Dr. Larson’s research interests focus upon juveniles’ psychological developmental capacities in legal contexts. She is funded by the MacArthur Foundation to assist states as they develop juvenile competence legislation and implement competence legislation once it is passed. As part of this effort, she authored a book entitled Developing Statutes for Competence to Stand Trial in Juvenile Delinquency Proceedings: A Guide for Lawmakers, along with her co-author Dr. Grisso.
The registration fee is $50 and includes:
